Notes on Attention

We often talk about attention as if it were a light that simply turns on when something is interesting. But attention is closer to a room: every new object we bring in takes space from something else.

A notification is not only a sound. It is an invitation to interrupt the thought that was already taking shape.

The cost of looking everywhere

The modern promise is that we can remain available to every person, every idea, and every emergency. In practice, that promise has a cost: nothing stays with us long enough to become understanding.

To pay attention is to accept a small form of exclusion. For a while, this page matters more than the next one. This conversation matters more than the one we might be having elsewhere.

What we repeatedly return to eventually becomes part of how we see.

That is why distraction is not always harmless. It trains us to expect replacement before reflection has had time to begin.

A modest defense

Perhaps discipline is not about forcing productivity from every minute. Perhaps it begins with protecting a few minutes from being claimed by everything else.

The goal is not to see less of the world. It is to see a little of it clearly.
